"Wow--our *25th* seems like it was only (admittedly a lengthy, event-filled) yesterday! Remember what you thought when you encountered alums from the class of 1963 back then? As the saying goes, "I resemble that remark!""

"The biggest event since the 30th reunion (actually, in my entire life) is that in May 2004 I married Farnell Cowan. Originally from North Carolina, Farnell worked in financial services in Boston for more than 20 years before coming to Washington to work for the Federal government.

Unlike me, Farnell is an extrovert, so she regularly gets me out of my home office and forces me to meet people who aren’t clients, potential clients, or distant relatives of potential clients. She is also an ardent traveler, and since our marriage, she has lured me to France, the Canadian Rockies, and Iceland, at least. Even our periodic trips to Carolina to visit her family seem like exotic travel to me.

As part of getting married, I moved from Minnesota to Washington. Minnesota was a refreshing change from the East, but it was time to leave. Despite some pretensions to the contrary, Minnesota is deeply insular and highly resistant to outside influence. Even 13 years and scores of friendships later, I was still a “foreigner,” and that was never going to change. I can live without the ice fishing.

Washington has many advantages, like the Library of Congress and an extensive network of free museums, and a few drawbacks, like the terrible weather and the omnipresence of the Federal government. We keep up our connection with Boston, where I still have family and where Farnell has countless friends, and we continue to vacation every year on the coast of Maine.

I still work as a freelance business writer and trainer, with clients around the country, and continue to find it rewarding. In my spare time--like virtually everyone in our class, I’m sure--I am a voracious reader, and I share Farnell’s enthusiasm for the Red Sox.
